How Much Gold Is in the Ocean

In 1872, British chemist Edward Sonstadt published a report declaring the existence of gold in seawater. Since then, Sonstadts discovery has inspired many, from well-intentioned scientists to con artists and swindlers, to find a way to extract it. Quantifying the Oceans Riches Numerous researchers have  sought to quantify the amount of gold in the ocean. The exact amount is difficult to pinpoint because gold exists in seawater  at very dilute concentrations (estimated to be on the order of parts per trillion, or one part gold per trillion parts water). A study published in Applied Geochemistry measured the concentration of gold in samples taken from the Pacific Ocean, and found that they were about 0.03 parts per trillion. Older studies reported a concentration of about 1 part per trillion for seawater, about 100 times more than other, more recent reports. Some of these discrepancies may be attributed to the presence of contamination in the samples collected as well as the limitations of technology, which in past studies may not have been sensitive enough to accurately detect the quantity of gold.   Calculating the Amount of Gold According to the National Ocean Service, there are about 333 million cubic miles of water in the ocean. One cubic mile is equivalent to 4.17 * 109 cubic meters. Using this conversion, we can determine that there are about 1.39 * 1018 cubic meters of ocean water. The density of water is 1000 kilograms per cubic meter, so there are 1.39 * 1021 kilograms of water in the ocean. If we assume that 1) the concentration of gold in the ocean is 1 part per trillion, 2) this concentration of gold holds for all ocean water, and 3) parts per trillion corresponds to mass, then we can calculate an approximate amount of gold in the ocean using the following method: One part per trillion corresponds to one trillionth of the whole, or 1/1012.Thus, to find out how much gold there is in the ocean, we must divide the amount of water in the ocean, 1.39 * 1021 kilograms as calculated above, by 1012.This calculation results in 1.39 * 109 kilograms of gold in the ocean.Using the conversion 1 kilogram 0.0011 tons, we reach the conclusion that there are  about 1.5 million tons of gold in the ocean (assuming a concentration of 1 part per trillion).If we apply the same calculation to the concentration of gold found in the more recent study,  0.03 parts per trillion, we reach the conclusion that there are 45 thousand tons of gold in the ocean. Measuring the Amount of Gold in Seawater Because gold is present in such low quantities and is included with many other components from the surrounding environment, samples taken from the ocean must be processed before they can be adequately analyzed. Preconcentration describes the process of concentrating the trace amounts of gold in a sample so that the resulting concentration lies in the optimal range for most analytical methods. Even with the most sensitive techniques, however, preconcentration may still yield more precise results. These methods include: Removing water through evaporation, or by freezing water and then sublimating the resulting ice. Removing water from seawater, however, leaves large quantities of salts like sodium and chlorine behind, which must be separated from the concentrate before further analysis.Solvent extraction, a technique in which multiple components in a sample are separated based on how soluble they are in different solvents, like water versus an organic solvent. For this, gold can be converted to a form that is more soluble in one of the solvents.Adsorption, a technique in which chemicals adhere to a surface like activated carbon. For this process, the surface can be chemically modified so that gold can selectively adhere to it.Precipitating the gold out of solution by reacting it with other compounds. This may require additional processing steps that remove other elements in the gold-containing solid. The gold can also be further separated from other elements or materials that may be present in the samples. Some methods for achieving separation are filtration and centrifugation. After the preconcentration and separation steps, the quantity of gold can be measured using techniques that are designed to measure very low concentrations, which include: Atomic absorption spectroscopy, which measures the amount of energy a sample absorbs at specific wavelengths. Each atom, including gold, absorbs energy at a very specific set of wavelengths. The measured energy can then be correlated to concentration by comparing the results to a known sample, or reference.Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, a technique in which atoms are first converted to ions, and then sorted depending on their mass. The signals corresponding to these different ions can be correlated to concentration by correlating them to a known reference. However, I do not think bullies should go to jail, because there are different degrees of bullying. Some bullies are victims, and sending bullies to jail does not cure them. Stopping bullying is the job of parents and schools. Parents play a key role in preventing and responding to bullying. Parents should recognize the warning signs that the child is involved in bullying. Children could be being bullied, bullying others, or witnessing bullying. Child maltreatment is of various types, which includes abuses of different kinds such as, physical, verbal, emotional, sexual and even neglect (Lim et al.,2015). Exploitation of children or child abuse happens across all social, cultural and economic groups and it is the duty of the government and society to play a role in ensuring the protection of children by staying alert and taking initiatives in reporting cases of child abuse to police or to the Child Protection Service. This essay examines the detection and management procedures of child abuse cases in Singapore and evaluates the effectiveness of present Singaporean law, and whether further amendments are required in order to tackle the issue of child abuse in a more efficient manner. Child abuse is often described as a harmful but preventable disease causing mortality and morbidity in children, who can otherwise lead a healthy life ahead of them. They deserve a childhood free from any kind of abuse and negligence. According to some clinicians, in most cases it is perceived that the parents of the abused children have also been a victim of negligence and abuse in their childhood. In such cases, in their adulthood, the parents often resort to alcohol and drug abuse, psychiatric disturbance and criminal behaviour (Guan et al.,2016). In addition to this, another main reason for abusive behaviour in parents is often linked to poverty or financial constraints. The leading agency against child abuse in Singapore is the Child Protection Service (CPS) of the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF), which was found in November 2012, along with the reformation of the previous Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (Sharma Mistry, 2015). According to Children and Young Persons Act (CYPA), it is the responsibility of MSF to protect children from abuse and neglect ("Safeguards for better detection and management of child abuse cases | Ministry of Social and Family Development" 2017). On the other hand, under CYPA, parent or guardian found guilty of maltreatment of a child or young adult is subjected to prosecution (Chong et al.,2013). The top three sources that reports the maximum number of child abuse cases to CPS are the agencies involved in the network that is, the health care services, schools and police. However there are certain instances when a case child abuse goes unsuspected and in such a scenario the society needs to be more alert in its investigation. For example, if a child shows signs of constant poor health, tiredness and unattended medical needs, then he or she might be a victim of neglect. At the same time, the interaction between a child and his parents also acts as a significant indictor of child abuse. For example, children suffering from any kind of abuse often shows signs of aggression or withdrawal when they come in contact with their parents. Children suffering from emotionl or psychological abuse show signs of restricted growth and development, depression as well as sleeping and eating problems. According to Tan Chuan-Jin, Minister for Social and Family Development, a recent surge in the high profile cases of child abuse has led to the close examination and improvisation of the prevailing laws in order to restrict the increase of family violence and also to ensure an appropriate punishment for those found guilty. In a case reported recently, a couple was jailed for torturing their two-month-old son, Mohamad Daniel Mohamad Nasser, which eventually led to his death. The mother has been sentenced to eleven years of imprisonment, whereas her boyfriend was given 12 strokes of the cane and a 10-year jail term, for causing grievous injuries to the child (TAN 2017). Later on , the Law and Home Affairs Minister, K.Shanmugam, commented, that the prevailing system of law should be taken into account to make sure whether they are adequate enough to tackle such cases of child abuse and also the public should be encouraged to report immediately when they are aware of incidents of child ab use (TAN 2017). However, improvement in detection and reporting of abuse cases among children by numerous organizations, such as hospital and schools, has allowed the CPS to investigate more cases of child abuse. 2,022 cases of child abuse have been reported to CPS in the last year, of which 551 cases were investigated, which were instances of serious abuse (Li et al.,2014). According to CPS Director, Carmelia Nathen, there has been a 40 per cent increase in the rate of child abuse, compared to the period between 2012 and 2014 (TAN 2017).Most of the incidents reported were cases of sexual abuse inflicted by a family member. CPS refers cases of moderate and lower intensity to charities, since they are entitled as specialist centres for child protection, and are thus capable enough to deal with these cases. However, in cases of serious child abuse, CPS takes the matter in hand and has the power to keep the child away from the parents, until they become sure of the behavioral changes in parents. CPS ha s enhanced its screening tools and processes, and training is being provided to professionals involved in the child protection system, in order to improve their procedures and methods in dealing with abuse cases. CPS also takes into account cases handled by professionals not belonging to the ministry in order to ascertain the safety of those children. According to child protection officer, Firdawati Masri, in most cases the abuser is the parent of the child and belongs to different income and ethnic groups. In certain cases, mental distortions and intoxicative addiction also prevails within the parents ("Playing a part in stopping child abuse" 2017). In one such case, CPS has given the responsibility of a six-year-old girl to a family friend, who was physically abused by her alcoholic father whereas her mother stayed with her boyfriend and was least concerned about her daughter. Whereas in another case, a girl who was kept in the storehouse by her parents, was eventually rescued by CPS, who placed the girl under the temporary care of caregivers until her parents changed their methods of parenting, and now the girl has been reunited with her parents and their relationship has improved ("Playing a part in stopping child abuse" 2017). Dr. Chan Poh Chong, head consultant of the division of general ambulatory paediatrics and adolescent medicine at NUH, has handled many cases of child abuse for over 20 years. In one such instance, Dr.Chan alerted the medical social workers when he suspected something wrong while examining a boy with serious injuries. The case was referred to CPS, who after thorough investigation gave the childs responsibility to other family members. These incidents prove the efficiency of the CPS to handle cases of child abuse in an orderly manner. There are three types of abuse cases, low, moderate and high. Low risk cases mostly involve parents suffering from temporary stressful period due to financial constraint or job change. Moderate risk cases involves rare or one time abuse that may lead to serious injuries. Whereas, high-risk cases refers to long period of abuses and the parents does not suffer from a sense of guilt. When reported CPS handles the moderate to high-risk cases at the earliest, however for urgent and immediate support specialist child protection center Heart@Feiyue has also opened its emergency line to the people. Thus it can be concluded that the cases of child abuse can be controlled not only by the initiatives of the government but also through the active involvement of society as a whole. Perception has never been random, since the beginning of time it has been human nature to judge others before really getting a chance to know them. People immediately cast others into stereotypes in every situation: they form a schema, or an organized set of thoughts about something containing properties and uses. These schemas effect the way people carry themselves around others. Schemas are usually formed with in eight seconds of getting the initial impression of a person. This by psychologists is know as the ?eight-second rule,? where people have been proven to form hypothesizes about others with in eight seconds of meeting or seeing an individual for the first time. Human nature has never been stated more accurately than in one little phrase, yet I have never fully understood the clich? until just recently. As I sat here in the computer lab last week I noticed how I judge those around me. Although she speaks nothing, I have alread y put together an assumption about ?the girl sitting to my left:? her personality, work habits and attitude through a semantic analogy, or forming a link between physical appearance and personality. Wearing gray pajama pants and a comfortable fleece sweatshirt while holding a dark cloth blanket, I have understood in my mind that she likes to be cozy and secure. She seems to be a girl with a very soft nice voice, even though I have never heard her talk. As ?the girl sitting to my left? uses earphones while at the computer, I put together that she probably is very considerate of others. These assumptions could, for all I know is false and inaccurate, but as a human being I realize my judgments on others. I came to this realization also while studying the guy behind me. Just as my other subject, ?the guy behind me? seems to be very ?uncool? to say the least. His oversized plaid jacket, tight laced large sneakers, and tight jeans combining with his out of control curly hair and spectacles allow myself to automatically place ?the guy behind me? in a stereotype of nerds. The way he crosses his legs also leads me to believe he is one of those that probably enjoy computers and Dungeons Dragons, yet for all I know this guy could be the best basketball player at Catawba. By his appearance I have already made assumptions about his lifestyle, or formed something referred to as Functional Association. After realizing the extent of judgement I cast on others, I began to contemplate if others would place me in certain stereotypes if I didn?t appear as I do; so, I decided to form my own experiment. I decided to make myself salient, or stand out, to better see my impressions on people. I began a three-day experiment where I would wear my not-so attractive glasses, a hooded sweatshirt, and Velcro shoes from Wal-Mart to dress like one would call a ?bum.? Of my many experiences of the weekend, three stood out from all the rest: my attendance at the soccer game, my trip to the Bar Charlotte nightclub, and being introduced to new friends. No girl in their right mind would dance with a guy with big ugly glasses. For we all know they have already formed something called an illusory correlation, or a memory of a negative or distasteful person or instance. Here I began to look at not only girls, but also guy?s faces to see what sort of an effect my appearance had on the way they viewed me. Sure enough I was getting looks of disgust from some, while faces of amusement from others; here I began to realize the brutality of human nature. First impressions are everything in today?s world. When dressed like a nerd with a straight-billed, over-sized ball cap, a greasy hooded sweatshirt tucked in urkel-style pulled up pants, I cast an impression to many spectators at this past weekend?s soccer match. Many parents looked as though I was repulsive, some thought I was joking, while others thought that it was my real lifestyle. Before I knew it I felt eyes from all directions casting judgements upon me. I began to smile comprehending a little more about perception of others, but I learned even more when my friend Katie introduced me to new acquaintances. When meeting attractive girls, most guys tend to attempt to look their very best. With my normal testing outfit I gained my uneasy looks from Katie?s friends and soon they had formed opinions of me?one of which was their romantic disinterest in me. They began to better accept me, though as I conversed with them more, yet never anything more than acceptance. Later that night, I decided to put my contacts in for the first time in three days and I soon realized the effect of appearance. For the first time, the girls were attracted to me because of my appearance and to them I replied to their stares with ?I?m not as ugly as you first thought, huh With these experiences I began to see first hand how people judge others and place people into schemas.
